Lance Corporal Adegoke, an army deserter, has been arrested in Benin, the Edo state capital, for armed robbery.According to PM News, the man used to serve in Port Harcourt with the 29th battalion of the Nigerian army. Explaining the reasons for his desertion, the suspect said he had run away after having been posted to Maiduguri.He left with his military rifle and uniform and formed a gang with two other men. The group had been terrorizing residents of Ikpoba Hill, Upper Mission and its environs in Benin.Adegoke pleaded for forgiveness saying that he knew that what they had been doing was wrong.SP Stephen Onwochei of Edo state police command said that all the three suspects would be charged to court when the investigation was concluded.The performance of soldiers fighting in the northeast against Boko Haram is an issue of great controversy in Nigeria.In a recent development the military authorities reportedly dismissed 290 soldiers over cowardice. While the army leaders insist they will not tolerate indiscipline and cowardice jeopardizing the security situation in the region, soldiers claim that they are not being given adequate weapons to fight the well-equipped insurgents.What is more, scores of soldiers have been sentenced to death over refusing to join anti-Boko Haram operations.
