New Hampshire woman tracks WWII soldiers buried in Belgium

By On August 08, 2016

Fogg, who lives in Gilford, New Hampshire, has collected stories and photos about the 40 New Hampshire men and the 25 from Vermont buried at Henri-Chapelle and published them in a pair of books. She's now documenting the accounts of 54 soldiers from Maine. She started off thinking she'd be satisfied with five stories, but as she gained momentum, she was inspired to continue.
"It would be really easy for me to stop, but it's just as easy to keep going, now that I've got a rhythm and system," she said. That system includes ordering "Individual Deceased Personnel Files" for each man, which can take two years to be delivered. In the meantime, she scours enlistment records in the National Archives and genealogy sites, and then contacts town libraries, historical societies and other organizations. Finally, she reaches out to friends and family members of the fallen soldiers.
"I like to know them. I like to know the person behind the name," she said. "My poor husband can't keep track of all these families. I've gained many, many grandmothers, aunts, and uncles." Sometimes, her research turns up distressing information — in one case, a soldier's widow was later charged with killing their 2-year-old son. But she sticks to the positive.
"There are a lot of family secrets that come out when I'm working on these stories, but I tell family members I'm not interested in those kinds of details ... I'm not looking to open up old wounds — this project is a celebration of life."
Fogg does many interviews by phone, but one woman in Vermont was adamant that they meet in person, so she and her family made the several-hour-long drive. The woman, whose brother is buried at Henri-Chapelle, was waiting in the driveway.
"She opened the passenger side door and she gave me a hug," Fogg said. "As she was hugging me, she said, 'I've been waiting 70 years for you.'" Claudette Bayko, of Somersworth, New Hampshire, grew up knowing that her uncle, David Gilbert, was killed in World War II and buried in Belgium, but not much else. In 2009, she sent a wreath to be placed at the cross marking his grave. In 2011, she got a call from her city's historical society saying Fogg was trying to reach her.
With help from a cousin who remembered Gilbert, Bayko and Fogg pieced together his past, including that he had dropped out of high school 10 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor to follow two older brothers into the Army. Because he never graduated, Gilbert's name isn't listed on a war memorial at Somersworth High School, and that always bothered Bayko.
So she is grateful that he is included in Fogg's book. "I have two grandsons that now know that their great-great-uncle was our family hero," she said. "And Aimee is my heroine for resurrecting David."

His brother Rahman Ali described him as a "kind, loving, considerate, wonderful" man.
He told Sky News: "He loved people. Black, white - he loved all people."
A family spokesman said the sports star died on Friday evening in Phoenix, Arizona, from septic shock "due to unspecified natural causes".
There will be a small family ceremony in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky this Thursday, followed the next day by a public funeral procession and memorial service, where ex-US president Bill Clinton and comedian Billy Crystal will deliver eulogies.
Flowers, cards, and signs have been placed outside his childhood home and flags have been flying at half-mast in the town.
The three-time world heavyweight champion was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1984 - three years after he retired from the sport.
Ali had been admitted to hospital in the days before his death suffering from respiratory issues.
Reports had suggested his breathing problems had been complicated by the neurological disorder, which had long impaired his speech.
Boxing stars past and present, including Mike Tyson, George Foreman and Amir Khan, are among those who have paid tribute to Ali, while political leaders including Barack Obama have also expressed sadness at the news.
Boxing manager Frank Warren told Sky News that "the world lost an iconic figure", describing Ali as "one of the greatest of all time".
"(He) became bigger than sport", Warren said, adding: "Muhammad Ali probably paved the way for Barack Obama becoming President of the United States.
"He changed the whole concept of being black in America."
US civil rights campaigner Reverend Al Sharpton said: "The legacy of Muhammad Ali is not just that he just floated in the ring, but that he stood up outside the ring.
"He was a champion out of the ring, and in the ring ... he was the greatest of all time in his sacrifice, in his dedication and in his commitment."
Born in January 1942 as Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr, a name shared with a 19th century slavery abolitionist, the boxer changed his name to Muhammad Ali after his conversion to Islam.

One of the boxing legend's final public appearances was in April, when he attended a Celebrity Fight Night to benefit a Parkinson's treatment facility in his name.
Ali is survived by his fourth wife Lonnie, along with his nine children.
Chat show host Michael Parkinson, who interviewed Ali several times, said he was "the most extraordinary and unique" individual he had ever interviewed.
He told Sky News: "There was an autumnal feel to him, that's the only way I can describe it. We talked about the possibility of boxers being mentally damaged.
"I looked at him the last time and thought, I will not see you again.
"You felt like you were interviewing a Martian or someone from out of space. The walls of conversation did not apply to him. When he took off on one of his flights of fancy, you just enjoyed the ride."

Heavy Russian airstrikes also bombarded IS territory east of nearby Hama province, according to the Observatory, a UK-based group that monitors the war.
The group has also claimed that US-backed Kurdish Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) took control of four villages en route to Manbij, an IS-held city in the of province of Aleppo, and that 10 civilians, including five family members, were killed in US-led coalition airstrikes in Ojana village near Manbij.

SYRIA-CONFLICT
Some 20 IS fighters and four from the SDF have been killed in three days of fighting, the Observatory added.
Meanwhile, more than 1,000 militants have begun a counter offensive against Syrian army positions southwest of Aleppo, according to the Interfax news agency citing a Russian monitoring centre.
Aid reaches Daraya
The ongoing fighting comes as the United Nations Security Council announced it will formally ask Syria to allow humanitarian air drops to besieged areas.
UN humanitarian chief Stephen O'Brien warned that access to millions of Syrians in need of help is deteriorating amid the fighting.
Taking Raqqa from IS is a major strategic goal for those seeking to topple the Islamist terror group and reduce its stranglehold on Syria.
